On September 20th, The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) officially declared a drought warning for central Maryland, including Montgomery County. MDE Encourages all Maryland residents to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10% to 15 %. Below are some tips to reduce your water usage. See the MDE Water Conservation Fact Sheet (linked below) for a complete list of suggestions: https://mde.maryland.gov/programs/water/waterconservation/Documents/www.mde.state.md.us/assets/document/water_cons/watercons_fs.pdf.
In the Kitchen
Run the dishwasher only when complete.
Defrost food in the refrigerator instead of using running water: A running faucet uses about a gallon of water per minute.
Use a dishpan or plug the sink when hand-washing dishes.
Don’t pre-rinse dishes before loading them into the dishwasher.
Keep a container of water in the refrigerator rather than waiting for cold water from a faucet.
In the Bathroom
Test all toilets regularly for leaks: A leaking toilet could waste up to 100 gal/day.
Do not use the toilet as a wastebasket.
Take shorter showers
Turn off the water when shaving or brushing your teeth.
In the Laundry
