Decks
Permit Required
Before making any repairs, additions or modifications to a deck that is more than 16 inches above adjoining grade, you need a permit. Note: Removing, altering or repairing railings or guards is considered a modification.

Exemptions
If you are only replacing / repairing non-structural decking boards, you are exempt.

Important Note
Be aware that even if no permit is required, any modified decks or patios must still meet current land-use regulations. The Town of Poolesville issues the Zoning Compliance Permit and Montgomery County issues the Building Permit

Fences
Permit Required
Residential fences require a Poolesville building permit

Residential Fence Permit Submittal Requirements
Maximum Height (Residential)
  • The maximum height in the front yard is 4 feet.
  • The maximum height in the side and rear yards are 6 feet.
  • All boundary fences shall be located 2 inches inside the property lines
Sheds
Permit Required
A Zoning Compliance Permit must be obtained from Poolesville and in most cases a Building Permit from Montgomery County is required.
